Dry Sandblasting / Abrasive Blasting

Aeroblast Abrasive Blasting offers traditional dry sandblasting as our main blasting application.

Dry grit blasting is ideal for steel surfaces need painting afterwards to avoid flash rusting that can occur during wet blasting. Many examples are car blasting, trucks, machinery, tanks and structural steel. Dry blasting removes rust, paint and surface contaminants resulting in a smooth and clean finish. It is also used as a decorative finish on surfaces such as concrete and is environmentally friendly compared to alternate methods of paint removal that use harsh chemicals.

The main types of dry sandblasting include:

  • Garnet sandblasting
  • Shot blasting
  • Bead blasting
  • Grit blasting
  • Glass blasting

Dry sandblasting is the ideal method of abrasive cleaning for anything that is getting ready to be painted/coated; it can be used to prepare substrates that are to be:

  • Painted
  • Powder-coated
  • Waterproofed
  • Adhesion for tiling on concrete surfaces
  • Electroplating
  • Rubber lining
  • And more

As a simple blowdown is required before applying the protective coatings, and it eliminates the possibility of flash rusting. It can still be used when working on projects other than steel, such as concrete, bricks, render, pools, timer, and basically, anywhere wet blasting can be used.

We often use this method to blast graphics or words into concrete surfaces using laser or aqua cut steel stencils to provide visually appealing architectural results. Another alternative it has over wet sandblasting is that it does not create any water runoff that needs to be cleaned and of course, does not waste any of our worlds precious water.

Dust created from dry sandblasting can be contained in many ways such as blasting in a booth, erecting encapsulation and By proving the use of dust extraction systems.  When dry grit blasting any number of abrasive media can be used such as crushed glass, aluminium oxide, steel grit, steel shot, garnet, copper slag, staurolite and many more. If you are unsure of what blast media is necessary for your project, speak to one of our friendly sandblasting and painting experts who can advise you on the best solution.
